A short guide to downloading and installing Tukuk apps as APKs — including why Android shows a warning and how to connect safely.

Why the "unknown source" warning?

Every app on tukuk.org (the app hub) has an ⬇ APK button. When you press it, our server builds an APK specifically for that app (if it does not exist yet, it takes ~5–8s; if it does, you get it instantly). The file is named tukuk-<name>.apk and downloads like any ordinary file.

Android will then show an unknown source / Play Protect warning. This is normal and not a virus. The reason is simple: our apps are distributed directly from our website, not from Google Play. Android does not "know" external publishers by default, so it asks once. We sign every APK with one shared Tukuk key, so the identity is consistent — and that is exactly what enables local updates (no need to uninstall and reinstall).

Installation steps

  • Open tukuk.org (the app hub) in Chrome (or another browser) on your Android phone.
  • Press ⬇ APK on the app you want. Wait for the download to finish.
  • Open the APK file from the notification or the Files app.
  • When Android asks, tap Settings → enable Allow from this source for your browser (once), go back and press Install.
  • Done — the app appears on your home screen and runs like any normal app.

For iPhone / iPad

APKs are Android-only. On iPhone, open the same app and use Share → Add to Home Screen. It installs as a PWA — an icon on the home screen, opening full-screen without a browser bar. Both routes give you a fully working app; only the entrance differs.

Want to remove or update?

Update: press ⬇ APK again after we ship a new version — install over the old one, your data is safe (same signature). Remove: Settings → Apps → [app name] → Uninstall, just like any ordinary Android app.
