Need to turn HEIC into JPG, WAV into MP3, or a short clip into a GIF? A browser converter does it locally, free and with no sign-up. Here is how these tools work and what to pick.
Formats that do not match
iPhone cameras output HEIC, but websites want JPG. Your voice recording is a WAV but too big to send — you want an MP3. A video needs shortening into a GIF to paste into a post. These trivial problems usually need special software or an upload site that demands registration (and sometimes sneaks in a watermark). A good browser format converter settles it in one tab.
How it works
Pick a file, choose the target format, convert. Prefer tools that process on your side (in the browser, via WebCodecs/WASM for many cases) — your file never has to go to a remote server, which is more private and often faster for medium-sized files. This covers images (JPG/PNG/WebP), shrinking sizes, and basic audio/video conversion.
Why "no install" matters
Non-technical people do not want to install ffmpeg or converter apps that clutter the desktop. They just want one file in another format. With a browser tool, the barrier disappears: open the link, do the work, close it. Many such pages can also be added to your home screen as a PWA, so the converter is one tap away next time.
Quick format cheatsheet
- Images: JPG for photos, PNG for transparency/text, WebP to save size.
- Audio: MP3 for sharing, AAC for better quality at the same bitrate, WAV only when you must keep the original.
- Video: MP4/H.264 for the widest compatibility; WebM for the web.
Next time you nearly swear at a wrong file format, the answer is usually one click away. You can look up ready-made tools from the Tukuk app hub or search.
