One box, every kind of “language”. Look up what a word means and translate it into dozens of the world’s living languages, then switch modes to write the same sentence in ancient scripts (runes, hieroglyphs, cuneiform, Ogham) or in the playful animal, alien and sound codes. Every result can be spoken aloud with your own device’s voice.

Type a word, pick its language, then Define for the meaning or Translate into another language. Speak reads it aloud.

How it works, and where the words come from

Definitions come from the free, open Free Dictionary API (richest in English, with several other European and Asian languages), and translation across dozens of living languages comes from the open MyMemory engine. We fetch these on our server and cache every answer — a word’s meaning for a day, a translation for a few hours — so common lookups never re-hit the upstream and one slow third-party call can never stall the page. The pronunciation button uses the speech voices already built into your own phone, tablet or computer, which is why it costs nothing and works offline once the page has loaded.

The ancient scripts are real alphabets

The elder futhark runic alphabet, Egyptian hieroglyphs, Sumerian cuneiform and the Ogham stone alphabet of early Ireland are genuine historical writing systems; each Latin letter is mapped to its closest attested sign, so the result is readable to anyone who knows the script — a transliteration, not a random font. The animal, alien and sound modes are, honestly, games: a fixed letter-to-signal code so the same word always encodes the same way. Nothing you type in any mode is stored.
