The order matters: every <, & and > is escaped before any formatting is applied, so the only HTML tags in the output are the ones this page emits. Supported: #–###### headings, **bold**, *italic* and _italic_, `code`, [text](url) links (http, https, mailto and site-relative only), - and 1. lists, > quotes, and --- rules.

Escaping first is the whole security story

Most online Markdown converters inject raw HTML from the input — which is how a paste into a comment box becomes a session-stealing script. Here the reverse is true: nothing that is not an entity or one of the dozen tags above can appear in the output, and links are checked against http/https/mailto/relative so a javascript: href dies on the spot. That also means the converter is boring on purpose: tables, footnotes and HTML blocks belong to bigger renderers, not to a paste box.
