The watch face maths, done properly: pace = time ÷ distance, printed per kilometre and per mile because runners live in both units. Splits assume even pacing, which is what a GPS watch promises you; the longer-race prediction then uses Riegel’s formula T₂ = T₁ × (D₂/D₁)^1.06 because doubling distance has cost a little more than double time since 1981 and every sports-math textbook.

Where the 1.06 came from

Peter Riegel fitted thousands of race results in 1981 and found performance decays predictably with distance — T₂ = T₁ × (D₂/D₁)^1.06 — exponent 1.0 being pure linear scaling, the extra 0.06 being physiology. Later studies put the exponent between 1.03 and 1.14 depending on the population and the heat. That spread is the whole story: the formula predicts the shape of the decay, not your race; it assumes training depth behind the shorter time. Use the split column to pace, and the wall column as a warning.
