🗓️ Week Number

ISO 8601 · W1–W53 · day-of-year · dates-to-week and week-to-dates

Two countries disagree about "week 1" every January, and the ISO 8601 rule settles it: week 1 is the week containing the first Thursday of the year (equivalently, containing January 4). Weeks run Monday to Sunday, so a 4- or 5-day January stub belongs to last year's final week. Both directions are on this page, from that one rule — including the Dec-28 check that catches every year-boundary case.

US convention counts the week containing January 1 as week 1, so its numbers trail ISO by one for years that start in November, December or January — 2026 starts on a Thursday, so its first four days are already ISO week 1 and the difference shows up the very next Monday. This page never counts from January 1: it computes floor((ordinal − weekday + 10) ÷ 7), the direct form of the Thursday rule, and cross-checks boundaries against December 28, which is provably always in the last ISO week of its year.
