Every shoe scale is the same length measurement in different units: EU uses the Paris point (1.5 × last length in cm), UK and US use barleycorns (⅓ inch steps, the Brannock formula for men), and cm is Mondopoint — the only one that is literally your foot. This page converts between them with the allowance built in (EU adds 1.5 cm of last, Brannock works from foot length directly) and says the quiet part out loud: brand lasts vary by half a size, so treat the answers as the start of a fitting, not the end.

Three units and one foot

The barleycorn (⅓ inch) was legally fixed in 12th-century England and never left: UK and US sizes are foot length in inches times three, offset by 23 or 22 depending on the men/women scale. Europe went metric in the 1900s — the Paris point is ⅔ cm, and a shoe\u2019s EU size is 1.5 × the last (the wooden foot it is built on), which is why the formula carries a +1.5 cm allowance. Mondopoint just states the foot in millimetres, which is why it is the only scale that transfers perfectly between brands. Converting between them is algebra; converting between brands is a half-size coin toss — this page gives you the algebra and tells you where the coin toss starts.
