ℹ️ What this tool does & how it works

Spelling lives in context: the same sound can be written five ways, so the sentence does double duty — it fixes the meaning and forces the letter choice. Pick a level, read the line, type the missing word. The 🔊 button says the word out loud using the browser’s own speech voice (nothing is downloaded), and hints surface one letter at a time.

Why the hard list is the right list

The level-three words are the ones large-scale spelling surveys keep finding wrong: separate, receive, definite, necessary — each missed for one specific reason. There is a hidden par in sep-ar-ate that keeps pulling the pen toward -reth; receive breaks the i-before-e rule because it is one of the rule's own exceptions; definite drops the -able people hear at its end; and necessary has exactly one pair (two c's, one s) where everyone feels there should be two pairs. Drilling random hard words spreads attention thin; drilling the champion misspellings concentrates it where the whole language actually trips.
