🔤 Word Scramble

The scramble is a true shuffle of the word (re-rolled until it differs from the answer), so every puzzle is solvable and none is accidentally pre-solved. Hint does what a teacher does: hands back one letter at a time, never more than all but the last, so the win still belongs to the player.

Why the hint never gives the last letter

A puzzle solved by the machine teaches nothing and a puzzle surrendered to frustration teaches less; the useful edge is one letter short of the answer, which is where the rest of the word snaps into place on its own. That is why Hint caps at length minus one, and why wrong guesses reveal a letter too — the game is built to keep the player in the almost-solved zone rather than the solved-or-stuck binary.
